Sexism comes in all froms. Until a few years ago women had few rights, even now women in Mexico women are property. However, in 1963 a pendulum was set in motion by the Congress in the US passing a equal pay act. Making it illegal for a women to be paid less than a man for the same job. Since that time the pendulum has swung in the right direction, passing all sorts of laws with the end goal of having equal rights for men and women, but perhaps the time has come when the pendulum has swung too far. Men are being prejudiced more and more.
In our Socials class we had a discussion about the military and it came up that women were not allowed on submarines in the Canadian Military. A few of the girls were outraged by this discovery, and were shocked to realize that this desicion was for women, not against the, in a submarine, there is little room, and, when a crew full of men are at sea alone for an extended period of time and in close quarters with women it would not be safe for the woman. It was soon after this point that I brought up the incident in our town. A man after seeing many female only gyms being hailed as "new age" and "revolutionary" he attempted to open a male only gym and was stopped because this was sexist. Many co-ed gyms have female only sections, but the rest is co-ed. One of the girls saw what I was saying and tried to be "smart", she said "So its like reverse sexism then?" That comment in and of itself is sexist, she was saying that it isn't sexism when me are being prejudiced against, only when its women being prejudiced against. The fact is, sexism is sexism, regardless of the gender being discriminated against. One girl said something about how they had gottten the short end of the stick for so long maybe men deserved it. This however is not right, firstly, she had not gotten the short end of any stick, by the time she was born women's rights were in place, secondly, by that logic seeing as Hitler was Gerrman, and the he had so many Jewish people killed, maybe Jewish people get to kill Germans now, no, this is not the way to live life, An eye for an eye leaves the world blind. I am aware that even in Canada and the US there is still some sexism, however this is becoming more and more scarce. This goes as far as rascism too, if a white man, and a black man were to apply for a job, 100% equal credentials, both equally perfect foe the job, the chances of the black man of being hired, assuming the employer is white, is far higher to avoid racial discrimination suites, not equal anymore. There are two kinds of rascism, discrimanting against someone because they ARE a minority and NOT discriminating against some because they are a minority. Do noy misread this article, I am for equality of all races, genders and ages, however, it is when the previously discriminated against people begin to gain more rights than other people that it becomes wrong. |
