Virus/Spyware thread
NOTE: Read this thread before posting about viruses or spyware. Any threads about viruses or spyware will be pointed here, unless you show us that you've attempted a few of these programs. Threads asking what software to use will be pointed here as well.

Lifehacker's Hive Five: Five Best Antivirus Applications - Antivirus software prevents viruses from getting onto your system, and help remove any that may sneak past. When you download and install one, keep it up to date, and scan at least once a week. Because some larger hard drives take some time to scan, start on a Sunday night just before you go to sleep. Most antivirus programs also allow you to have the system shut down automatically when it's done scanning.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE): The antivirus program recommended by most users of this forum. It does require a VALIDATED and GENUINE copy of Windows XP or higher, but is the quickest, free and overall best antivirus program available to date.

Spybot Search and Destroy - Anti-spyware or anti-malware is for getting rid of programs that may invade your privacy or affect computer performance, but is not classified as a virus. Just like antivirus software, however, install one, and keep it up to date! As well, set it to scan before or after your Antivirus scan, and clear out anything it finds

CCleaner (CrapCleaner) is a freeware program to remove excess temporary files, fix up registry errors (some), and generally clean out anything that's not needed. It does not need to be updated with definitions like the above links, but the program itself comes out with updates. Once installed, run it every few days; it takes no more then about 5 minutes on an 80 GB hard drive

Combofix and vundofix are used for getting rid of many hard-to-remove spyware and virus infections. These sometimes should be used as a last resort, but this forum can help you through using them if need be
TrendMicro's House Call is for scanning your computer for viruses if you don't have any installed.

Finally, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is great for scanning and finding hard to remove stuff that many other programs miss. You can run the free version, but it does not give you constant monitoring of your computer.
