FEATURE INTERVIEW: Ill Scarlett
PunkTV.ca exclusive interview by Dixon Christie with Alex Norman and Swav Pior of Ill Scarlett in support of All Day With It. * * * * * Dixon: We are here at the Calgary Warped Tour 2007 with Ill Scarlett, can you introduce yourselves and your band? Alex: I am Alex. Swav: And I am Swav.
And you guys are only playing a few Canadian dates of the tour, is that correct? A: Yeah well we did Vancouver, we just did Calgary and then we do Toronto, Montreal and we also do Boston.
Then you guys have a show in between all that like in Edmonton tomorrow. Did you just get asked to play Canadian dates or what is up with that? S: Our CD comes out on July 10th, All Day With It so we have a bunch of promo stuff like in our local area so we kind of got wrapped up in that and that is why we are on the tour then do our own thing and come back on.
And that release is called All Day With It. Can you tell us about that and what it was like to work with the producer who produced one of No Doubt's best albums? A: It was fun man. We did it in California so that's always a good time. Matthew is so experienced and such a brilliant mind when it comes to music especially with melody and production and stuff like that so it was really fun. He has a lot of confidence in us and we had a lot of confidence in him so it turned out really good, and we can't wait to see how it does.
You also choose to record tracks from your independent release, to be released on this new album. Can you tell us how you decided to do that? S: Basically we didn't have enough money at the time to record everything in full, so on the EP we did we did two tracks acoustic. Then we got a little bit more money In LA and we really wanted to produce it and wanted to see how they sound in full.
The band got their big break a few years ago when you played outside in the parking lot of the Toronto date of Warped Tour. Kevin came out and asked you guys to play the BBQ. How was that, just straight out of the blue? A: Ya it was just awesome, just set up played and Kevin picked us up. He told us we were playing his BBQ and said sure, I didn't even know who Kevin was at the time. We just played a whole bunch of songs and drank beer and ate hamburgers, and he told us that we had Warped Tour next year. Since then we've always had dates on the tour.
What's the biggest difference between playing outside the gates compared to being inside here? S: We're actually aloud to do it! A: It's actually crazy, we went from parking lot to the first time today we were actually on the main stage, and for us is the ultimate honor.
Is it important to the band to portray a politically active message through such songs like "Heaters" (Police State)? A: Ya I guess it's important; I wasn't really trying to make a statement with it or anything. But Police always take my weed and I can't say or do anything to them, so the best I can do is rip them in a song. We have friend that are cops and their cop as hell but some of them are on such a power trip that it's just a little jab at them for pissing me off.
Your song "Who's Got It" is also the official song for the FFA under 20 soccer tournament here in Canada, how did that come about? A: Ya they just called us and the label, and they just said do you have a song or a band and they told them about us. They sent them some stuff and we sent them a new song and they really liked that one so they just picked it. S: Ya we actually beat out Ricky Martin.
You going to perform the song live at any of the dates of the tournament? A: We were supposed to perform it on July 1st on Canada day, but because we wanted to come out here to do Warped Tour it just didn't work. Schedule conflicts, soccer is a great sport, don't get me wrong but Warped Tour is a lot better.
On your MySpace you guys have a custom made Nintendo Wii to give away, what happened with that? S: They haven't given it away yet?! A: They just asked us to design a Wii so we give it to our buddy Adrienne who does most the artwork on our albums and he just did an amazing job. We were blown away, I want it. I've even entered to win the damn thing.
So we have two questions we ask everybody, which of the following experiences you have had: Have you had an alien encounter, seen a ghost, of seen the face of god? A: I've seen a UFO...just by my house. I live by a lake and it kind of came in from the lake, everyone is going to think I'm crazy, so I'm not the only nut bar here...it was just a light that was going back and forth, I thought it was plane but all of a sudden it came in above me and flew away. It made no sound, it's pretty cliché but I swear to god I had no idea what it was. It wasn't a helicopter or a plane, so I guess by definition it was a UFO. S: I don't know about aliens, but he's never told me that story. I should chill by the lake a little more often.
What would people find most surprising to learn about the members of Ill Scarlett, or the the band or any members that aren't here you want to dish on? S: I heard from a pretty reputable source that Will has a huge dick. That's what I heard from my girlfriend, he knows some things from another girl...I think. He's the gifted one in the band.
