NEWS: Best of Music 2008

Rewind to January and hit play as we take a look at the musicians that rocked our world and the ones who failed miserably (uhhhhhh... Jonas.) Did Britney's comeback win back your love? Was Guns n' Roses' Chinese Democracy worth the 13-year wait? We mash all musical genres together and serve it to you on a Nextacular plate of melody smothered in cheese.

USER'S CHOICE: BEST ALBUM OF 2008
Kanye West - 808's & Heartbreak

It was a close vote but Kanye West edged out rockers Nickelback, Metallica, and fellow hip hop artist Akon as your choice for Best Album of 2008. Winning your love is an impressive feat for an album that was released only one month before the end of the year.

Check out Kanye West's video for "Heartless":

USER'S CHOICE: WORST ALBUM OF 2008
Jonas Brothers - A Little Bit Longer

Three times was not a charm for this New Jersey "band". You voted overwhelmingly against the Jonas Brothers' third album A Little Bit Longer. This album could have been "A Little Bit Shorter" in the eyes of Nexopia users. Epic fail.

We would offer up a link to one of their videos but we would rather not subject you to that kind of inhumane punishment.

USER'S CHOICE: BEST "OLD-ISH" BAND IN 2008
METALLICA & AC/DC

You were split down the middle between Metallica and AC/DC for Best Old-ish Band in 2008. Both Metallica's Death Magnetic and AC/DC's Black Ice made a big impact on the charts despite the fact that both of the bands have been rocking out longer than most of us have been alive.

Here are a couple of videos to remind you that some old dudes can still kick the crap out of the eyeliner-wearing posers rockers of today.

Metallica - "All Nightmare Long"

AC/DC - "Rock ‘n Roll Train"

BEST AWKWARD MOMENT OF 2008
Lily Allen & Elton John: GQ Man of the Year Awards

Who said that the youth of today has no respect for their elders? Lily Allen has a few bottles of some champagne and verbally lashes out at a music icon on live TV.

BIGGEST MELTDOWN OF 2008
Amy Winehouse

This should come as no surprise. With Britney Spears out of rehab and seemingly normal, Amy Winehouse took the initiative to ring the coo-coo bell louder than the rest in 2008. This crazy-talented singer was just... well, crazy.

Blame the drugs or the constant harassment by the paparazzi, the bottom line is that no one lost their box of Smarties in a bigger, more public way, than Amy Winehouse.

All jokes aside, let's hope that she sorts herself out in 2009.

BEST MUSICAL FILM OF 2008
Mamma Mia!

In a year where the main competition was High School Musical 3 and Repo: The Genetic Opera, the Best Musical film of 2008 is defaulted to Mamma Mia! Not a great showing for musicals when compared to last year's Sweeny Todd and Across the Universe.

BEST MUSIC BIO-PIC OF 2008
Control

Joy Division was the first band of its kind and inspired such groups as U2, Moby, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Bloc Party. Even if you're not a fan of the band, check out this DVD for Sam Riley's poignant performance as the late lead singer, Ian Curtis. Control follows the life of Curtis from age 17 up until his suicide at 23. Epilepsy, extra-marital affairs, and a haunting voice comprise the storyline.

BEST CONCERT OF 2008
Feist @ Dear Lake Park (Vancouver)

A starry, moonlit night, warm summer's eve as the perfect setting for a petite woman with a killer guitar who once strummed outside of the Orpheum for money and a dubious bag of oregano. It came together this past August in a great performance by Leslie Feist and her band. Highlight of the evening was her cover of Nina Simone's "Sea Lion Woman".
