REVIEW: Dragon Fli Empire – Redifine

Redefine is Calgary hip hop duo Dragon Fli Empire’s third album. This time out, they have brought a loaded line up of Western Canadian artists to the studio to join them. This illustrious group includes Moka Only, Cadence Weapon, and Lynn Olagundoye, to name just a few.

The album’s lyrical content is honest. They are a group from Calgary. They did not have had the artistic benefit of being straight out of Compton, Bed-Stuy, or The Bronx, but we can’t penalize them for that. It’s admirable that they rhyme about what they know rather be inauthentic.

Generally, the backing music is outstanding over the course of the entire album. Unfortunately, during the first few tracks, the listener is distracted by the mediocre mc’ing. With the exception of Moka Only’s appearance on the track “Paradice”, this album sounds like traditional Canadian hip hop which, shouldn’t be a bad thing… but it is. As the album plays through to the later tracks, the brilliance of the melody overshadows all.

In the end, the tracks fare poorly as individuals but just succeed as a total album.
