Gunman was attempting 'death-by-cop'

The young man who entered the Princeton RCMP detachment armed with a 9mm Friday has made his first court appearance.

Benjamin L. Coan, 18, is facing two charges of uttering threats of deaths to members of the RCMP and public, break and enter and theft of RCMP property.

Constable Steve Holmes says Coan forcibly entered the Princeton detachment armed with a handgun in what was clearly an attempt to commit 'suicide-by-police.'

He says Coan did considerable damage to a parked police unit.

“During this time a local officer established contact with him and attempted to talk him into stopping and surrendering. Officers maintained a containment while waiting for the Emergency Response Team to arrive with additional support equipment,” says Holmes.

He says the situation escalated when Coan walked from the detachment to a local service station.

“Police quickly evacuated the premises of workers and customers prior to his arrival. Shortly after this event, he agreed to surrender and threw down his weapon and walked to the police and surrendered.”

Holmes says additional charges may be laid against Coan, who is well known to police.

The Princeton RCMP Detachment was the scene of an armed standoff Friday.

Police say an 18-year-old man, armed with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, was eventually arrested after breaking into the detachment.

"Preliminary investigation suggests the man broke into the detachment with the purpose of damaging the building and shooting any police officers he believed were inside," says Constable, Steve Holmes.

"The police Emergency Response Team was called out and secured an area around the detachment building. The suspect was contacted by cellular phone and he eventually surrendered to police."

Holmes says the man was injured while damaging parked police cruisers and the detachment windows.

No members of the public or RCMP were hurt during the incident.

The man is in custody pending charges and a court appearance.
