maybe
somedays
when you're sitting alone in your room
and maybe you're crying
or maybe you're drunk or stoned
but you're definitely alone even
if you're with a group of friends
drinking coffee and
looking like everyone else
wants you to look
and you stop for a second
and you stare up at the ceiling which
is perpetually white
no matter where you go
and you sob a silent sob or
cry an invisible tear
and you say in your thoughts
"if i believed in
reincarnation,
i would bet
my past lives
were so much better than these.
i would bet
i loved hard and long and deep
and the water was more pure and clean.
i would bet
the sun shone brighter and
the women were more beautiful and
i would bet
i was
unerringly
incredibly
happy.
i would bet
this is my punishment."
