Mood swing is a purely psychological phenomenon whereas the effect of moon is studied from a physical or astronomical point of view only. As such the co-ordination is missing somewhere. Although most scientist and doctors specially psychologists discard the full moon effect on mood swings, yet there are a number of instances when people all over the world have cited their experiences regarding what they felt, when there was a full moon or a few days before or after the full moon night.



The full moon effect on mood swings is prominent in those people who are diagnosed with Seasonal Affect Disorder or SAD. These people experience high degree of restlessness and sleep disorder on and around a full moon night. People tend to become tense and acutely suffer from anxiety and mood swing disorders. Mood swing syndrome is prevalent in people who are under depression. Moreover those who are under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or even medical drugs tend to have severe mental and psychological disorders. There are interesting accounts of some routine cases in mental asylums, rehabilitation centers and psychiatric clinics, where the patients under treatment show repeated and high degree of what can be called as madness or craziness.

It is not that there have not been any theories forwarded to explain the full moon effect on mood swings. According to one such theory, the moon exerts its gravitational force on the fluid content of our body. Since most part of our body is made up of water, this force is greatly effective. There is another theory based on the tidal theory. The high tide and low tide condition seen in the seas and oceans is associated with the lunar cycle, where high tides are the result of the gravitational influence of the full moon condition. Similarly this lunar gravitational force influences the fluid content of the hypothalamus. Hypothalamus is a part of the brain which regulates the function of hormone secretion, and thereby regulates feelings, emotions, sleep and sensitivity to temperature changes etc.

So there seems a lot of ambiguity regarding the connection between full moon and mood swings. Actually what is really required is that a group of scientists, astronomers, psychologists, neurologists should sit together and research on full moon effect on mood swings. Then only I think we will get authentic information on full moon effect on mood swings.
