My favourite film of 2006 is
Children of Men
I have to rant about this film and just how much I enjoyed it, I will probably spell several things wrong so give me a break.
Children of men… Wow
From the first scene in the film when you are un expectedly jolted by Clive Owen’s near death experience it never lets go. In 2008 an influenza virus will kill all the children in the world and make all women infertile. This results in the collapse of society that is beautifully captured by the cinematography, which gave a feeling of the true pain and realism people would feel if they were thrusted into such a situation. The story is based around “Theo” (Clive Owen). He is not the average action movie thriller hero… yes he smokes, drinks and well doesn’t give a fuck but his suave way of doing things manages to help escape just about every situation in the film without picking up a gun once.
The collapse in society results in an extreme hatred Fuji’s (illegal immigrants). And the government is prone on rounding up such Fuji’s and putting them in internment camps. An organization called FISH (the guys who are on the side of the immigrants) is headed by Julian Moore (ex-wife of Theo) is trying to get a girl named Kee out of London and needs Theo’s help to do it . Of course ironically Kee is the only pipe dream left in the soon-to-be non-existent world. For in a world of infertility she is pregnant. Un-fortunately Kee is also a FUJI. With the help of Theo, Kee and several others along the way they try to travel to the HUMAN PROJECT (their last hope for the baby’s survival).
The outstanding story was backed by wonderfully developed characters such as Michael Caine who plays an outdated hippy who grows strawberry flavored pot. One character in the film that I personally enjoyed was Syd, a military guard the never once spoke in 1st person. All of these elements put together with the magnificently fast paced style of director Alfonso Cuarón made “Children of Men” my favourite film of 2006.
Sorry mike I love departed but I love children of a men more
