The Truth Seeker
“Go to sleep, I love you”-Chantel. To the point, making sure there is no confusion in the message and reassuring the most important final thought to make sure I know. I love you is not a question to her. It does not require and automatic response of “I love you too”. It is simply a bold statement that needs to be said because it is the truth. Her insight is mature and perceptive in the way that she applies it to all people and not specific to any one individual. Chantel is wise beyond her years and her character is magnetic to those who are in her presence. Not a princess or an alien, but my little sister.
Chantel fills the role of sister quite well and goes above and beyond as she strives to find her uniqueness in a world where individualism is not “different”. I have to give her a lot of credit since she is living in a time where nothing is considered sacred in culture, shock value has flown out the window and ethical choices are based on the pragmatic view of “if it feels right, do it.” Her entire world is filled with peer pressures that any adolescent is faced with. But it is much more than that. There is a light in Chantel that people around her see but can never pin point what it is. As she develops her mind and body, this immanence seems to continue to grow along with her. Her conscious ability to discern truth from situations and apply them in her everyday interactions is inspiring. Take for example, communication.
Chantel has a history that many people will only read about. All of the odds are against her. Alcoholism runs like water in the family tree. A sense of neglect assumes that her sense of self worth should not fully develop. And numerous cases of abuse within the home would ultimately destroy her and her potential partner and/or offspring. The examples in her life are distant and constructed from memories of the past, the good times. However, her communication skills are exceptional and can only be enhanced with the way she is practicing them. Her words are full of encouragement and strength and her sense of timing is second to none.
I recently embarked on an adventure to Bolivia, South America. Needless to say, two months anywhere will get you second guessing about what really matters in life. Self doubts and temporary highs are what the travelers’ life is filled with. Before I left for the trip Chantel and I were to exchange letters at the airport so that we could have a piece of one another even from far away. I regret to this day that I did not follow through on my end of the deal because of the heart that went into hers. In the letter it expressed her admiration to a sister that is exactly like her and all of my faults are cast away because of the love she has for me. She gave an example of when recurring physical abuse in our home would flare up and Chantel would stand in the middle of the oppressor and me, turning to both, and literally stop us from killing one another. She not only tries to stop the hurt but will take it on if it means that either party can feel less pain. Her compassion and strength are the things that create who Chantel is.
So who is the role model here? I know Chantel is my role model. She has her faults like everyone else but her ability to forgive herself and others is remarkable. I have had a huge struggle with forgiveness for my family. But if I had to give an example of where I saw unconditional love I would tell you of the kindness I have seen in Chantel. I have seen time and time again where her gift of second chances comes naturally and even her worst enemy or the person who hurt her (and at times regretfully that has been me) she forgives.
This intrinsic light that Chantel holds is similar to only one person I know of. She tries very hard to develop her faith in Jesus Christ and her humility and servant hood reflect those values. I am so grateful for her influence in my life and the impact and that is refreshed everyday I get to spend time with her.
