I don't need to tell you it's summer.

Because if you love ball, you've been looking forward to summer for months.

The heat, the sun, the stale air of a gym in the off-season. The beaten backboards and the cracked concrete. The faded three-point lines, the bent rims and, of course, the tattered and often absent nets. You, more than anyone, know what it means to find that perfect court. The one that doesn't have weeds growing in the post. A net that swishes instead of a rim that silently swallows your shot. If you know summer hoops, you know these things. And you love them all.

For me the summer was never about taking time off- it was about putting time in. It was about expanding the limits of my game- the freedom to try new things and push myself. Reinvent myself. It was my time. Summer was a difference between running ball and playing basketball, and there were no expectations to exceed other than my own. It's when my work began.

That's right. Work. Summer ball is working on everything you were scared to try last year and want to perfect for next year. It's working on your skills, your swagger, your complete game. It's failing when you're allowed to, so you succeed when you have to. It's learning the killer cross-over. Perfecting the fade-away. Mastering the baseline.

It's working on your game, so your game doesn't look like work.

    It's summer time.

    Get to work.
