We recently asked what your ideal profile would look like and got some great feedback from the Nexopia community. Most liked how they were, but suggested some improvements. When designing these features our goal was to change as little as possible, only adding features and flexibility, giving you more control over your profile.

Here's some of the stuff we added:

  • Easier and faster to edit your profile
  • New profile layouts -- including a single column layout
  • All blocks are movable and removable (except your profile pictures and username block)
  • Friends list loads 10 times faster on your profile
  • Multiple friends list styles to choose from...
    • Different layouts
    • Select the number of friends to display
    • Or... completely remove it!

The only thing that has been removed from the current profiles is the scrolling friends block (as it received a lot of complaints and did not work for some people.) We're hoping that you'll like the new options that we've made -- but if not, please tell us!

Head over to our testing site and take a minute to check everything out and let us know what you think! Keep in mind that there may be some bugs still, so if you see something not working right make sure to tell us. We want to hear your feedback so that we can make them even better before we launch them to the rest of the Nexopia community.

Remember that this site is NOT THE SAME as the normal Nexopia. Whatever you do on it WILL NOT show up on the real Nexopia.com. So feel free to play around, edit your profile, try out the new stuff and when you go back to the normal site everything will be as you left it.

Oh Wait I have a question. When you load your page is the friends list supposed to be random friends each time?

Yes, we made them display random friends now (that way all of your friends get equal opportunity to get highlighted on your list.) What do you think of that aspect? Like it? Dislike it?

Oh I like it. Its different. At least this way there wont be a bunch of people freaking out 'WHY AM I NOT IN YOUR TOP #'

I just asked cause I was confused at why people weren't staying in one spot aha.

What are you going to miss about the scrolling Friends block? What did you use it for that you can't do with the new types of Friends blocks?

Removing the old version is a pretty tough decision for us and we'd like to get it right.

Looks great! The only thing I don't like are the buttons for "Skin" and "Edit". I think they're ugly. But other than that, I think the change is great.

We wanted those links to be a little more visible. Lots of newer users (and even some old ones) didn't realize they were there on some pages.

That's fine, I just don't think they fit with the theme of nexopia. I think they'd look nicer if they were those grey boxes with the black text inside, versus that weird pseudo-3d look.

To clarify, I think it'd look better if they looked like the "Done" button when you're editing your page.

I commented below on this as well. It is hard to make buttons that work for any color combination a user skins their profile with. We can't just use the same buttons as everywhere else because you won't be able to see them very well on certain backgrounds.

Is their anything in particular you don't like about them, or is it just a personal preference?

Thanks for you feedback.

I think it would be better if you could move the username, & profile pictures around.

Try logging on again to the test site. There's a chance you may have just tried it at the same time when we were pushing code and it wouldn't have worked.

So now you guys know why we have a test site in the first place - we've introduced a bug while trying to fix something else. We'll get this fixed up. You can expect that this will happen again.

Just logged out, Closed it down and re-opened it and it still won't allow me to look at my own page nor will it let me edit my profile.

rolling a fix to the beta site...should be back up in 5 min if not sooner...

If you hit the "Fail" page, it means that you've found a bug. If you fill in the little form with what you were trying to do, I'll get a bug report

I've filled out a number of bug reports =]

Oi! Wtf.
Why'd you get rid of the sideways scroll on gallery blocks?
LogicWolfe - 31, Male, Edmonton

The primary motivation was the same as for removing scrolling from the friends block. We were able to make profile loads about 10x faster (as far as javascript goes). Having the scrolling provided a limited amount of functionality (the pictures were very small) at a high cost in performance. It also discouraged people from going and checking out the full sized albums and leaving comments.

I know you have the one column view or whatever, but it was also be swell if somehow the blocks were extend-able between the side column and the main column.

More complex layouts were something we toyed around with, doing them well though adds a lot of complexity both for the implementation and the user interface. This set options seemed a good middle ground, at least as a starting point. Further efforts will be determined based on community feedback.

I don't know if it's just me but I cannot edit/remove any blocks on the profile on Internet Explorer, works fine in Firefox though.

Looks good though otherwise, I like that you're finally giving users more options on how they want their profile to appear. I do however agree with whoever said the new Edit/X/Skin boxes look silly. Another thing I've noticed with the new profiles, it doesn't allow you to have a line of images. Instead it beaks them off into a new line…

Example:

What it should look like.

What it looks like on the Beta Profile.

I remember this was a problem the last time Nexopia released new profiles (when the entire site was redone) hopefully this will all get fixed again. One last suggestion, would there be any way to remove links on the profile menu bar? Say if a user doesn't enable shouts the shout link on the menu bar would disappear opposed to being an inactive link?

*I read above at *;-Will's comment about the sideways scroll on the gallery blocks and I agree, it looked a lot nicer with the scroll but I would much rather the faster load on the profiles.

Wow! Thanks for all the great feedback. We totally missed the issue with the line of images - we will fix that.

The Internet Explorer issue is definitely a bug we will get fixed.

As for the buttons, we had to do them differently so that they would still work no matter how you skinned your profile. This is not an easy task as we have to use gradients and transparency so that you can see them with any color combinations you choose.

hatchetwhore we're having trouble reproducing your image bug
can you set up a block on beta on your profile? also, make sure there aren't any spaces between the img tags because that will put a break/newline in there

*The freeform editor box doesn't show up on Internet Explorer.

This is what's happening for me with my profile: Example here
*There is no space between the first two large images in Internet Explorer, only Firefox and Safari that I've personally found.

The code is not seperated, there's no spaces, etc. etc. Originally I thought the width of the profile sections slightly changed but unfortuntely the 1 column has the same problem.

I just think they don't fit with the way the rest of nexopia looks. I suppose technically it's personal preference, but they just stick out like sore thumbs, and I know you wanted them to be more visible, and in that regard you certainly succeeded, but I think they just don't fit.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. We will probably keep playing around with them, but it is hard as they look very different depending on the skinning.

Any other thoughts? Suggestions?
