In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. This year, Vancouver City Hall, Lions Gate Bridge and several local restaurants plan to participate.

So, worried about what to do for an hour without electricity? Here are a few ideas:

1. Go for a walk. Count how many more stars you can see and check out which of your neighbors are also participating.

2. Read a book (with plenty of candles!)

3. Fondue, anyone?

4. Invite a few friends over for candlelight cocktails

5. Dine out. C Restaurant, founding restaurant of the Vancouver Aquarium's Ocean Wise Program will be preparing and serving meals by candlelight during Earth Hour. www.crestaurant.com.

Happy Earth Hour!

- The Sustainability Committee
