- Is it just me, or the New York Yankees are the greatest example of why owners should leave the running of a sports club to the people they hire? Since the beginning of George Steinbrenner's ownership of the Yankees (seemingly when dinosaurs ran upon the earth), he constantly interfered witht the running of that club, causing headaches and laughs for years. From the constant firing and rehiring of Billy Martin in the late 70s, early 80s, to his squabbling with Joe Torre, Steinbrenner often made a laughingstock of one of the most storied (and eventually hated) franchise in sports. You may say, Randy, the Yankees have won a few World Series since then. True, but imagine how more they could have won if knowledgable baseball mind had of been left in peace? sAs of last fall, the 77 year old George left the team to his two sons.
