Hi we are the THE LEFT! We're a hard working North American band with a love for pop music! We all grew up together and throughout all the years have remained close friends with a common passion to make exciting music! We'd love to give you a little more insight into our world and the chance to get to know us as well as we know each other!
In addition to a shared workspace, we share a common musical background. Drummer Eric Davis and guitarist Carl Davis are brothers, and our father was the music teacher at the high school that the four of our original bandmates attended. Being in different grades, we didn't get to know each other until college – but seven years and more than 300 shows later, we have become a solid team of workmates and friends.
While we may seem like the poster child for unity and cohesion, we try our best to create diverse material and take an integral approach to our band. It may be cliche but we are inspired by greats like the Beatles and other pop contemporaries like Cold Play! THE LEFT have pledged to never to write the same song twice, repeat ideas, or even reuse tempos. We think Melody is key: and our motto is style may change, but ultimately the melody must be catchy and memorable for every song. Our songs feature stalwart group vocals and four-part harmonies lead by singer Kevin Gau. Our jangly pop sound expands on universal themes of romance lost and found, with ear-pleasing turns of phrase that anyone can relate to.
THE LEFT attribute their musical success to the mentorship of their producers, multi-platinum award-winning GGGarth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers) Ben Kaplan (Shakira, Hedley). Over the last 5 years we have rigorously developed the band’s songwriting, touring and recording and introduced the band to their manager, Allen Moy (54-40, Barney Bentall). We are former 99.3 The Fox Vancouver Seeds and Summer Sessions winners and THE LEFT were also announced as finalists in the prestigious 100.5 Peak Performance Project. Our performance credentials include opening spots for Canadian treasures 54-40, Hedley, The Trews, Tal Bachman and Blind Melon. We've been successful with local television as well and CTV licensed almost all the songs from our last album for their primetime drama, "Whistler".
With all of these accomplishments behind them already, it should be no surprise that THE LEFT’s music has a positive, bright sound - like four guys with a spring in their step. "Lots of people say they come up with music when they're in the darkest place in your life," explains Eric Davis. "We're the opposite. We all feel loved and appreciated. None of us ran away from home or anything. Our slogan is 'taking fun seriously'.
We've worked extremely hard over the past couple of years to get THE LEFT to this point. Through the guidance of our excellent production team we've completed the next chapter of our story and are ready to present our newest recordings to the world. The first phase of our release features the Cellophane EP and includes 4 lead tracks from our master collection of new material. The Cellophane EP includes the songs, "Cellophane", "Love Don't Work", "Better Off This Way" and "Ill Carry You". We're extremely proud of these songs and can't wait to get them out there and into the heart and minds of our friends and fans everywhere with plans to release the full-length later this year! Watch for THE LEFT ...as we'll be out there promoting the recording into the spring and summer of 2011 performing all of our new songs and having a blast doing it! THE LEFT is a new movement, gaining quick momentum and allegiance with loyal followers - and we're only just beginning to shine!
Stay tuned for more to come from THE LEFT!
