The Problem With Music
I read one of the most interesting descriptions of the music industry a couple years ago, but couldn't remember where I found it. Well, I found it again:
The Problem With Music by Steve Albini.

Snakes on a Plane
So, I just got back from seeing the movie Snakes on a Plane with my friends from the office. All I've got to say, is it is a damn funny movie. If it wasn't so blindingly trying to make fun of itself, it'd be one of the worst movies ever made. Thankfully, it is so ridiculous that you get past that and just laugh. Thanks Thomas for the tickets!

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
I just finished listening to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy radio series again, for the 5th time or so, and still love it. It is just so amazingly well done!
Does anyone know if more than 18 episodes were ever made? I've heard of the books, and will have to read them someday (I've read the first), but want more episodes of the radio series.

Just got a Mac
Since there have been some compatability problems with Macs before, I went out and bought a mac today. While I can use it, I can't say I'm all that impressed (I've only been using it for like 20 minutes, but still).

  • Tab-order in safari is weird, it skips buttons and checkboxes, going straight to the next edit box, making it impossible to login nicely without a mouse.
  • Ctrl-left doesn't go by one word, but to the front of the line. The home, end, and Page-up/down buttons scroll the page, not the textbox that I'm editing.
  • The normal copy/paste commands don't seem to work. It hasn't copied the unix way of middle-click to paste the current selection either.
  • Since everything shares a menu, I don't know how to run programs that aren't on the main menu thing. What if I want to open a terminal to ssh to the servers?
  • Safari doesn't seem to have tab browsing, or at least I haven't figured it out yet. Middle click opens a new window, not a new tab.
  • Alt-tab doesn't switch windows.
  • I haven't found a good list of the windows that are open. I can press F9 to see them, but that doesn't show the ones that are minimized, nor does it show names. Minimizing windows puts a nice little icon of them on the launchbar thing on the bottom, but wouldn't look too good with alot of them minimized. Why are they right next to the trash though?
  • Resizing windows is weird. There's no way to do it from points other than the bottom-right, so if you want to expand it to the right, you have to first move it, then expand it.

Maybe I'll find the answers or reasons yet, but at the moment, I'm more impressed with Ubuntu as a desktop OS than with OSX.

Stress and sleep
Ever had a day or week where 12 hours of sleep isn't enough? That's where I am right now... And to think I was going to stay up till 8am swapping a harddrive.

Linux file cache rules
I just finished adding 2 database server pairs to handle the site. It turned out to not go as smoothly as I had hoped. One of the database servers had lost its main harddrive a couple months ago, but since everything it needed to run was cached in ram, it kept on ticking without any problems. It did mean the backup server wasn't keeping up, as the binary logs were on the harddrive that died. That could have been a big deal, since it didn't have a live backup, but that server is now out of rotation and replaced with a pair that does work properly. I had planned on moving the forums to their own server, and splitting one of the stats servers. Due to the dead drive, I ended up only moving the forums, and replacing the other. The stats server that has been causing minor problems should be a bit better now too though, as I raised its connection limit. There are more memcached servers up now too, which should keep the db load a bit lower, at least once they fill up. Hopefully that'll deal with this weekends traffic.

First rule of Forums
I'm not sure where I found this, but I first heard about it a couple months ago. Since then, I've found the need to use it in arguments several times, but had to search for it, so here is the link so I don't forget: http://fishbowl.pastiche.org/2005/11/20/charles_rules_of_online_forums. Basically, every site is always in a constant state of decline, from the point of the view of the observer.

Feeling mainly better
I spent all of last week in bed, or at least bundled up and resting. Saturday, I went in to the office for the first time in a week, though I didn't actually get any work done. Instead, we built Rob's 3d puzzle. Now, over a week later, I'm still feeling the effects of last week. I still need more sleep than I usually do, and I still have a bit of a cough, though it's certainly not enough to keep me up at night, thank god. Apparently this will take a week or two yet to get rid of.
It's nice to be back in the office though. I setup a couple new database servers this afternoon, and will put them into rotation sometime in the next few days. That should help with some of the scalability problems we've been having over the past little while.

Being sick sucks
A couple days ago, I started coughing. Not alot, but still once in a while. Friday night it got worse, so around 5:30 when I went to bed, I was coughing every 10 minutes or so, and not little coughs either.
In the last 25 hours, I have been in bed for 23-24 of it, trying to get some sleep, rest, and generally get better. Unfortunately, I cough every 20 minutes or so, waking me up. I usually sleep on my front, but doing that makes me cough even more, so I can't do that. I'd be amazed if I've had more than 6 hours of sleep in the past 24 hours.
Around 6:30 this morning, I somehow randomly got a bleeding nose, so I'm just waiting for that to clear up.
Damn I'm tired...
