"Alex Auld began last season before joining the Boston Bruins. (Mark Humphrey/Associated Press)The Ottawa Senators filled a goaltending void by picking up veteran Alex Auld on Tuesday.

Auld went 12-13-5 with a 2.68 goals-against average and .907 save percentage last season, which he split between Phoenix and Boston.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native has recorded five shutouts in 140 games in his NHL career. He started 67 games for Vancouver in 2005-06 but was dealt after the season in the blockbuster trade with Florida that saw netminder Roberto Luongo go to the Canucks.

The Senators were looking at several options to fill the second goaltending spot alongside Martin Gerber. The club parted ways with Ray Emery, their starter in their run to the 2006 Stanley Cup final, after a series of disciplinary issues and lacklustre play last season.

Ottawa signed Auld to a two-year deal worth $1 million US per season."
