Wearing Hip Hop Clothing
Hip hop clothing refers to a fashion statement that is unique only to hip hop. Hip hop originated from African-Americans who lived in New York City and Los Angeles, California. These two cities contributed to the overall look of hip hop clothing. The look of hip hop fashion has constantly changed. There were different hip hop signature looks in the late 1970s to mid-1980s, and in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Hip hop clothing also evolved between mid 1990s to the late 1990s.
In the late 1970s to the middle of the 1980s, hip hop clothing was characterized by tracksuits, sheepskin and leather bomber jackets. Tracksuits are two pieces of garments. These two types of clothing are the trousers and the jacket. Sheepskin is also known as lambswool which refers to a cloth taken from the skin of a sheep.
Bomber jackets are jackets used for flying. But in hip hop, bomber jackets are considered the in thing when made of leather. In the late 1980s to the early 1990s, hip hop became more evident in black people. With this, baggy pants started to become popular as hip hop clothing. Other types of clothing for hip hop in this decade are Africa chains, kufis and fezzes.
The hairstyle dreadlocks also became a fashion statement. The colors red, black and green also promoted the hip hop culture. In the early 1990s, baseball caps became an item for hip hoppers. The colors of clothing were characterized by its brightness. Neon colors were popular during the said decade. Other fashion statements came in polka dot designs and wearing clothes backwards. In the late 1990s, gangsta fashion was introduced. Along with the gangsta style is the gangsta rap. This was prevalent until the middle of the 1990s.
The popular styles in this decade were baggy pants and black tattoos. Bandanas were also popular together with shirt tails worn outside the pants. Baggy pants were made to look like they were falling off its place because hip hoppers did not wear them with belt. The trademark of the hip hop clothing in the late 1990s was the look of prison inmates.
Today, hip hop clothing has evolved all the more. Bling blings are already worn by hip hoppers. Jewelries and metal crafts are popular today like platinum chains and dog tags.
