THE GOOD ALWAYS DIE YOUNG

Global Calgary sports anchor Collin Smith, aka "Joe Sports," has died after a lengthy fight with leukemia. He was 45.Collin adopted the persona "Joe Sports" during his early career as a sportscaster in Calgary radio, using the name exclusively all through his broadcast career. He worked at CJAY 92 and A-Channel Calgary before joining Global Calgary in 2000; he anchored Global Sports at 11:30 for five years. He was renowned for an energetic, opinionated approach to sports journalism and for his great sense of humour. He touched many lives with a keen interest of amateur sports, giving many high school teams and athletes similar exposure in his daily sportscast to that afforded professional athletes.“We learned a lot from Collin over the last year and a half about optimism, determination, dignity and the value of maintaining a sense of humour.,” said Dave Budge, Global Calgary’s news director. “This will be a difficult time for many of us, and I hope we can remember those lessons in his honour.”

Collin was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2005. He underwent a bone marrow transplant on June 1, 2006, which was successful but he struggled with a number of related complications afterwards.

Thanks Joe!
