1. Spawn of Possession - Noctambulant (Technical Death Metal)
This one was added to my list much later than all of the other
releases this year, and it turns out that this is one of the best
CD's to come out this year. Why you may ask? Because it
has all the great things a timeless album should have. melodies,
harmony's, consistancy, hooks, and awesome solo's! Definetly
the CD to look for if you're into Necrophagist and the like.
2. Gorod - Leading Vision (Technical Death/Jazz Metal)
French technical death/jazz metallers
Gorod have
really hit the nail on the head with this release.
Leading
Vision is the next step up from their debut album:
Neurotripsicks, and unlike most bands that are
slowly turning themselves to shit nowadays, these guys
seem like they have their heads on straight. This album
recieves best album of 2006!!
3. The Faceless - Akeldama (Technical Death Metal/Experimental)
Wow. I'm pretty sure that this is one of the best up and comming
bands out there today. This CD is fucking insane! There are some
weird keyboard parts (which are actually quite
tasteful even though they use some quirky effects here and there.)
In any case, if you're looking for something new to listen too that
doesn't quite suck, listen to:
The Faceless's debut full-length,
Akeldama.
4. Arsis - United in Regret (Technical Melodic Death Metal)
Arsis also shine this year with their much anticipated
sophomore album '
United in Regret.' With a barrage of
new and twisted melodies and catchy as hell new riffs, this
one is definetly a keeper.
5. Suffocation - S/T (Brutal Death Metal)
So you say you like brutal death metal? Give this a spin,
Suffocation: back in full force, and my god does it sound
good.
6. Kalmah - The Black Waltz (Blackend Death Metal)
Finally, something to come out of finland this years
that isn't upsetting. Last year it was
Children of
Bodom's:
Are you dead yet? and this year
upset was that
Wintersun's next album:
Time,
isn't due out until mid 2007! But back to the album. Quite
possibly one of the most non-dissapointing changes a band
has ever made. They practically changed genres with this
album, yet still kept their trademark sound! That's something
rarely seen nowadays.. Well, it's seen a lot, just not done well.
7. Anata - The Conductors Departure (Technical Death Metal)
Back with their own brand of Technical Death Metal
are veterens
Anata. This album doesn't quite lead
up to their previous effort,
Under a Stone With No
Inscription, but hell, it's better than most of the other
garbage that's come out this year. However, with some
very memorable parts here and there, this CD is definetly
worthy of being one of the best of 2006.
8. Deicide - The Stench of Redemption (Brutal Melodic Death Metal)
A welcome surprise this year was
Deicide's
newest release. Why you might ask? Because of
the addition of 2 new guitarists: Ralph Santolla (ex-Iced
Earth, ex-Death) and Jack Owen (ex-Cannibal Corpse).
Jack Owen really adds nothing to this album. In fact, he's
probably the main reason this album isn't higher up on my
list. But Ralph Santolla. No there's something
Deicide
can finally brag about. Not only is he a practicing christian
(which is exactly what
Deicide stands against) he's
the most talented musician ever to grace their band.
Santolla has created many amazing solos for this album,
definetly worth a check.
9. Psycroptic - Symbols of Failure (Technical Death Metal)
Hm. and interesting release from Australian band
Psycroptic.
With the addition of new vocalist Jason Papiatte, it certainly sounds
like a step down from their last release. Especially in terms of
cool riffs. Not to say there arn't cool riffs on this CD, however
Scepter of the Ancients just has so many more. One
thing you can count on though is amazing drum work by Dave
Haley.
10. Visceral Bleeding - Absorbing the Disarray (Technical Death Metal)
Visceral Bleeding, a band from the same town as
Spawn of Possession have come out with quite
an impressive album in 2006. Not quite up to par with
Spawn of Possessions' latest album, but this
is still a rather interesting release. Its very fast and
technical, and it does keep your interest the whole
way through.. Definetly check this out.
These albums were all the runner up's of 2006:
1. Strapping Young Lad - The New Black (Industrial/Fusion/Death Metal)
2. Kataklysm - The Arms of Devestation (Brutal Melodic Death Metal)
3. Cannibal Corpse - Kill (Death Metal)
4. Martyr - Feeding the Abscess (Technical Death Metal)
5. Vader - Impressions in Blood (Death Metal)
6. Revenance - Omen of Tragedy (Brutal Death Metal)
7. Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis (Technical Death Metal)
8. Dim Mak - Knives of Ice (Death Metal)
9. Electro Quarterstaff - Gretzky (Instrumental Metal)
10. Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage (Power Metal)
Predictions for 2007's top 10?:
1. Wintersun - Time (Melodic Death/Viking/Folk)
2. Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds (Brutal Melodic/Progressive Death Metal)
3. Defeated Sanity - Psalms of the Moribound (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
4. Odious Mortem - Cryptic Implosion (Brutal Death Metal)
5. Beneath the Massacre - Mechanics of Dysfunction (Technical Death Metal)
6. Behemoth - The Apostasy (Blackened Death Metal)
7. Deathchain - Cult of Death (Death/Thrash Metal)
8. Laethora - March of the Parasite (Death Metal)
9. Kronos - The Hellenic Torture (Death Metal)
10. Daath - The Hinderers (Industrial Death Metal)
This is how I see it so far.. However, some bands tend
to be sneaky about release dates, so we'll see if
some of the bands up there actually end up staying
in their positions..
