So, non-nerds might want to ignore this post. [People who are not google] just announced something called OpenSocial, which is a facebook apps-like mechanism running on an open platform of essentially embedded js and html. At least, that's the jist I'm getting.
But where's the security? Letting untrusted apps run js on my social network site (and that's not just a hypothetical. 1 million actual users, close to 3 million the way facebook and myspace counts them) means giving them access to cookies (we do httponly, but that doesn't cover all browsers by any means) and the ability to do a lot of really nasty things to our users.
Seems to me facebook didn't do a closed platform so much for lock-in as for a desire to avoid security issues just like this. The hoops you have to go through to get any serious information on a facebook app, including several levels of user confirmation, are a serious hindrance to overt abusive use.
Either google has failed to make this useful to me, or they have failed to market it to me. Both of these possibilities seem very surprising.
When: Aug 20th
Where: My apartment
What exactly will it be? Who knows. All that is known so far is that it will likely take place at Graham's apartment on the evening of the 20th. It may involve flaming cake (because a good idea is always worth ripping off), but will NOT involve a catapult or trebuche.
BYOB and there will likely be homemade pizza dough to make pizzas with. If you like weird toppings on pizza, feel free to bring them. There is also a grocery store next door.
Admission free if you bring/are a hot red head or are a human being of some sort.
I passed people having sex in railtown park. For some reason I find that kind of funny.
Do you suppose there's someone out there who always eats pie at 3:14 in the afternoon? I bet there is.
my wii. yes, you read that right. my wii is on the intarweb. let the jokes begin!
I actually put up a profile that's about me. Partly because some skeezy little 16 year old didn't get the joke that was in the old one, and I realized that since I split my profile it doesn't make as much sense.
Anyways, we actually did get a Wii a day or two after launch. Thanks to some guy who managed to get 3 somehow and sold one of them to us for a bit over retail. However, we still haven't managed to find any extra controllers after all this time. Which is really annoying.
And I have to say, it is pretty awesome. I don't like Zelda's tacked-on use of the controller, but the game is good anyways. Wii Sports is a lot of fun and great use of the controller though, and I'm really anxious to try it out multiplayer. Especially boxing.
Meanwhile, the Virtual Console is sweet. Yeah, I have a computer plugged into my TV and I could just download ROMs, but meh. I'm only getting games that are worth paying for, and I don't see why I would play games that aren't.
Anyways, I <3 SNES SimCity. One of the best old console games out there, and imo the best pre-2000 version of SimCity.
I really didn't expect to get shut out of getting a Wii today.
GameCube this ain't.
