From the times unknown man had been running after his luck. To enhance his good luck “charms” came into the picture. A “charm” generally means any piece of jewellery generally worn around the neck or the wrist that helps to keep evil sprits at bay. It is generally believed to bestow good luck on the wearer. Charms can be in the form of bracelets, necklaces or anklets.
Primitive man had “charms” made out of animal bones, mud or clay and stones. Some of the primitives of Africa had them made even from sea shells. In the medieval ages the Germans had charms made from mammoth tusks. The Egypt believed that these helped in identifying themselves with gods after death. During the rein of the Romans, Christians used fish bone charms as a means of identification. The Jewish people wrote the holy law on a piece of cloth and tied it as a necklace so that the scriptures were next to their hearts. It was said that famous personalities like Queen Victoria also wore charm bracelets.
In recent times the charm bracelets has emerged as a new fashion in the European countries. The beads that are being used range from gold and silver to glass. The charm beads can also be used on chains worn around the neck and even as earrings.
