OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
They are bodyguards… there to “serve and protect” their more glamorous teammates-the quarterbacks and running backs. Theirs is a game of hand-to-hand combat, sacrificing their bodies- and recognition- for the success of the men behind them. They battle in the trenches through blood and sweat and tears, through the pain and humiliation, until the job is finished.
Thesewarriors slam into their opponents play after play. 60 or 70 plays of pounding the same man, trying to find some way- any way- to keep him out of the backfield. Grab, trip, push, tackle- but don’t get caught. Under the pile, eyes are gouged, throats are grabbed, punches are thrown. Anything goes. By the time they walk off the field at game’s end, lineman have been head slapped so many times, the migraines quickly escalate.
They are noticed only when they fail...
...False start, illegal formation, personal foul, holding- all bring bright orange flags from referees and jeers from onlookers. Being beaten for a sack makes them bums. It is the only position that is best when not seen or heard about. Playing offensive line can, at times, be truly offensive, and nearly always thankless. Honor and glory are not what these men seek. For them, it’s simply about keeping their teammates unscathed.
Football Players. Will do anything just to be able to tell his teammates a great story in the dressing room. Live the dream until they are 35 then realize they never made it. You lace up the cleats, put on the cutters, strap on the helmet, and walk on to the field and nothing else matters. It doesn't matter that you failed a test, your girl is being a bitch, or that you got a ticket on the way there...you're world is absolutely perfect for the next couple hours. Here's to cadence, touchdowns, big blocks, overtime, living on the road, freezeing rain, early mornings, breaking tackles, being allstar, countless hours of practice, cross countrys, puking, thousands of dollars, juking d-men, endzone to endzone rushes, big hits, broken arms, new cleats, doing the same play over + over, seeing pretty much every football movie ever made, wheelin' broads, coaches, saying everyone one on the team is your brother, the word "f uck" has a totaly new meaning, pealing someone off the ground, stoping them on the one, ran outta pro wrap, let downs, miracles and most of all - the game of Football. Why? Why do we run back and forth night after night? running so hard we throw up. running so hard your heart beat rings in your head, while your lungs are grasping for air. Late nights, early mornings, Friday nights, Saturday evenings, broken bones, torn muscles and deep bruises. We push through it all. Because we live off our adrenaline, because the game frees your spirit, because the party in the locker room is second to none, because you're invincible once you step on the field, because one hit can make you smile all night, square in the corner, over the shoulder with one hand, cathes that can only be called realing it in, the burn from the turf when you stand, the feal of pig skin, and cleats carving into the ground is a rhythm to live by, because its possible to run fast enough to leave all your worries behind. Sweat is the cologne of our accomplishment. Why? Why would someone push themselves so hard the uneducated pussies always ask? ATOM, pee wee, bantom, flag, highschool, midget, tier 1, 2, 3, and 4, Jr, College, and if your smart University, CFL, and always that little chance NFL ... It's never been for the money, it's not for the girls, and it's not for the fame...The Boys' play because we fucking LOVE IT... II- Thou Shalt Get Sick All the Time
Now God said to Student, you must be sick all of the time. And student said why. And God said unto him, you shall share drinks, stay up too late, drink too much and make out with people you don’t know. Therefore, God said, you shall be sick all year round. But God said, blessed are the sick for they have partied the hardest. And it was good.
III- Thou Shalt Write Witty Away Messages
Student asked, but God, how will I show everyone that I am funny? And God said unto him, thou shall write witty away messages. God said to student, you shall never just say you are in the shower, you shall say you are getting wet and wild…in the shower. You shall never say you are at class, you shall say you are sleeping…in class. God said, if you do not write witty away messages, I shall smite you. IV- Thou Shalt Wear a Hoodie

Student asked God what kind of Hoodie should it be and God said, you shall own one with your school’s logo on it and you shall own many others of varying colors and creeds. V- Thou Shalt Shit a Lot
And Student asked of his bathroom habit and God told him, Student, you shall eat in the Cafeteria and you shall shit a lot. And it will not be good shit, it will be the shit of the devil for your ass shall burn for hours. Your school shall put laxatives in their food and you shall feel their pain. And Student began to weep, and God said unto him, Student, fear not the shit, for all your fellow students will be experiencing the same. And Student dried his eyes and thanked God and God told him to use wet naps to ease the pain.
VI- Thou Shalt Eat EasyMac
Student asked unto God if there was any alternatives to the cafeteria, and God said to him, you shall eat a lot of EasyMac. It is easy to make and you don’t need milk or a stove. And student said microwaves were forbidden by the RA. And God said to him, you shall hide the microwave under your bed with a towel on top. And Student asked, what if it is discovered. And God told him to stop being such a pussy, and it was good.
VII- Thou Shalt Hook Up
Student then asked of sex. And God said, Student, you shall hook up and be happy. You shall go home with random people every weekend and forget about them the next day. You shall see them at class and be awkward amongst their company. You shall exchange saliva at bars and parties and it will be good. And Student became gleeful and God told Student to wrap it up because He knows where she has been, but Student does not.
VIII- Thou Shalt Join a Club and Never Go to Meetings
Student inquired of his spare time and God reminded him that he should be napping. But Student said he wanted to do other things. So God said unto him, you shall join a club at the beginning of the semester, but then never go to meetings. And Student asked why he should not go to meetings, and God told him, because the glee club is gay. And Student understood His wisdom.
IX- Thou Shalt Wake Up Confused
God said to Student, there will come many a day when you shall wake up in the bed of another and not know where you are. You will not remember what you did last night and you shall be confused. You will see that you have nipple rings and a tattoo now and are covered in Sharpie. And Student was disturbed by this, but God said, you shall tell great stories about it to your friends someday. And Student understood and God took a sip of a beer.
And God gave Student the final Commandment
X- Thou Shalt Gain Weight
And Student wished to hear the final commandment and God said he would not like it. But Student insisted, so God said unto him, you shall gain weight. However, God said, you will not buy new clothes, so you will wear sweat pants a lot. God said, Student, you will watch a lot of TV and become fat to which Student wept profusely. But God comforted Student saying, you will still get ass even if you cannot tie your shoes anymore. Student felt better and God pointed to Student’s chest saying, those will soon be bitch tits. And it was good.

Clinging on to sanity but crossing the lines

As an advanced society, we pride ourselves on improving in many fields, such as medicine and science. What is astounding is the fact that on the other end of the spectrum our society as a whole cannot seem to view females as equals to males. As seen in this newspaper article, “ Beauty on red carpet needs behind-the-scenes magic” women are not only discriminated against in the work place, but objectified all throughout society.
This article looks at the preparations of female music and movie stars must go through in order to make a strong appearance at awards ceremonies, in comparison to how male stars prepare for these same awards. Through these contrasts one can truly get a grasp on how much pressure out society places on females to act and dress in order to be viewed as, “attractive,” “hot,” or “sexy.” These pressures and expectations include; being thin while still being “curvy” in certain places, long thick flowing locks of hair, as well as covering up any skin blemishes. These women have to meet all of this criteria, while also wearing sleek designer dresses to show off their bodies, like a steak on a platter. Due to this, we showcase women not so much as equals to men, but merely fragile, weaker individuals that are objects of sexual desire. Males at these award shows on the contrary, may show up to these ceremonies wearing no more than jeans and a t-shirt. The critics would be sure to bring this up, but as fast as they approach this topic, the quicker they will dismiss it on the grounds the man is “sporting the grunge look.” If a woman made an attempt to wear something other than something “sleek” or “sexy” she would be accused of, “not caring about her appearance” or “letting herself go.”
At first glance this may not seem like a very big issue for society. The problem becomes adamant when we look at how the media portrays these individuals in the lime light as “role models” for children. It’s a well known fact that in the early ages, children tend to imitate individuals that they look up to or see on T.V. because they want to be “just like them.” This leads to a subconscious submission to the belief of inequality between the two genders. There are numerous examples of this in our society. One of the most common examples being a young child wearing a dress dancing, singing, or playing the damsel in distress. When asked why she acted like that, a common answer would be “because Britney Spears does it,” or “that’s how they act in the movies.”
Every movie or music video that focuses on a female’s looks as opposed to her other qualities, such as intelligence or physical abilities; or when we see a woman playing the role of “damsel in distress” "sex symbol," or the “housewife” adds to the concept that women are inferior to men. Although it has been proven time and time again men and women are equal in nearly every way, the subconscious messages and images we receive often play a large role in our personal beliefs. Until members of our decide to stand up and fight against the objectification and inequality of women as opposed to turning a blind eye, these stereotypes will live on forever.
