Personal Response – “The Sea Devil”

In the short story, ‘The Sea Devil”, by Arthur Gordon, the main character,
the man, undergoes a permanent change on his outlook on life, thus
becoming a dynamic character. It starts out with the man, living in
Florida, going fishing in the dark. It was his escape, the missing void in
his life that made him happy. He was wealthy enough to feed himself and
didn’t need to fish for a living, it was just for his inner peace. As he
fishes, he spots two swirls in the water, so he cast his net and caught
something. As it turns out, the ‘swirls’ turn out to be a giant sea devil!
Before the man has time to react, he is pulled into the water and dragged
around by the manta ray. As he is struggling for life, he is presented with
two main conflicts, the giant ray (and him attached to it) and whether he
should continue struggling or just give in to death. He decides to live and
so he struggles and eventually breaks free. Afterwards, when he has
returned to his boat, he decides to free the fish that he caught,
symbolizing his life-changing experience has changed him. He vows to
no longer fish again.



Similar to the man, I, myself, have gone through a life
changing experience. I remember vividly, all the nurses and doctors
shuffling around quickly, their faces weary from worry and urgency. The
whole air seemed to be heavy with doom, and it weighed everyone down
as they went on their business. The loud clicks and beeps from the life
support systems seemed to be the only noise of the whole place. The
hallway to the room was long and narrow, and empty. Past the hallway, I
got to the hanging cloth that acted as a screen to prevent stares and
block out some sound. There she was, laying there on the bed,
motionless, eyes closed and very pale. The woman who had been so
strong my whole life, my protector, so very frail. The doctors didn’t know
what to say, other than it might be okay, it might not. The first time I
entered the room, I could say nothing, open mouthed in disbelief at the
sight in front of me. As the night went on, I came and went when it was
permitted, but as the rest of my family showed up, we all gave each other
hope for the best. When it got close to midnight, the doctors finally told
us she would not make it through the night. The shocked silence
remained for it seemed eternities. We all decided to stay at her side,
until she finally passed. The tears came falling from every eye that night
and it eventually happened. All hope crushed, and our inner selves
shattered in pieces, we went home. Silent.



In conclusion, I feel I am similar to the man because just as
his ideas about fishing were destroyed, so were my hopes. I have learned
to not get my hopes up too high without proof. My outlook on life has
changed to the point where I can be satisfied from the little things and
take value in life itself.
