New Year's Eve slaying victim was stabbed

January 4, 2009

Edmonton's last homicide victim of 2008 has been identified by police as 18-year-old Steven Lee Mills.

The medical examiner concluded that Mills died of a stab wound to the chest.

Mills was found on the ground at 51st Avenue and 106th Street around 11:40 p.m. on Dec. 31.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

Homicide detectives have released surveillance photos of two males they'd like to speak with in relation to this death.

Both males are described as "persons of interest," between 16 and 18 years old, five-foot-six to five-foot-eight in height and weighing 140 to 160 pounds..

Victim 'always had a smile'

Police say vital information still missing in case of 18-year-old stabbed in street on New Year's Eve

By Elise Stolte, The Edmonton JournalJanuary 9, 2009

The family of homicide victim Steven Lee Mills is busy pasting his picture in 50 donated Bibles to give to mourners at his funeral on Saturday.

The 18-year-old was found dying from a stab wound to the chest in the middle of 51st Avenue on New Year's Eve.

He used to sing worship songs in the shower so loudly they could be heard from the living room a floor below, said his mother, Hailey Mills.

He tried to convert many of his friends to Christianity, and often called her, mid-debate, to double-check the meaning of a biblical passage.

"He was a boy of a lot of hurt. But it didn't matter how hurt or sad he was, if someone else was sad, he would cheer that person up," she said.

"Always had a smile for someone."

On New Year's Eve, Mills was celebrating with his brother at a friend's house near Southgate Centre Mall.

He left the house late in the evening with two friends to buy munchies at the corner store a couple blocks away and never came back. Passersby found him lying face down in the middle of 51st Avenue with a stab wound to the chest. He was dead when paramedics arrived.

Hailey Mills found out from police that night.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate, but that's as much detail as she wants to know now, she said.

"Maybe in time, but I don't want to remember my son that way. When you know something like that, you tend to relive it. I have my other boys to look after, too."

Mills had an 11-month-old daughter, Angel Dawn, who just learned to crawl up stairs.

Hailey takes care of the child, as well as her three other children aged nine, 18 and 20.

She has been focused this week, she said, curling up on her living room couch to talk publicly for the first time about her son. She has been a rock for his friends, many of whom stop in to cry on her shoulder. "I know it will hit me next week," she said, "and I know that when I need it, my friends will be there for me, too."

Mills was born in Edmonton and went to Britannia Junior High School. He was a joker as a kid -- his Grade 1 teacher phoned his mother three times just to double-check: Did you really cut off his thumb, give birth to a new son, let Steven go polar bear hunting?

He actually lost his thumb due to a birth defect, and Hailey thinks that was one of the reasons he was bullied often at school.

He dropped out after Grade 9 to take odd jobs shovelling snow and working at Dairy Queen.

Police have few witnesses to the stabbing. They released photos of two "persons of interest" taken from the corner store surveillance video, but have yet to receive any tips of significance, said police spokesman Dean Parthenis.

"Investigators haven't given up hope at this time," he said, "but they're still missing key information. Hopefully people will come forward."
