'Joking around' to the end
Man sent text messages to friends before freezing to death while fleeing police
The only thing more chilling than the frigid wilderness trapping Curtis Wood was the message he sent before dying.
Stranded in -20C weather without a coat, he got lost in the Fort McMurray woods after crashing his truck Tuesdat morning and dashing into the trees to evade police.
"It was so dark and he was so deep into the woods, he didnt know where he was, " said his friend Haley Anderson.
"He knew he wasnt going to make it."
Before dying, Wood sent a text to a friend, saying: "I'm fucked"
"he was half-joking," Anderson said. "He was laughing and joking around.
"He kept his good humour the whole time."
Shortly after midnight Tuesday, Wood crashed a pickip into a tree, prompting passing drivers to stop and help. Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
So when Wood learned cops were on their way, he fled into the dence wilderness, never to be seen alive again.
After fleeing, the 35 year old made several calls to friends who lived nearby For McMurray work camp, where he also resided.
"There were four of us he kept calling," said Anderson, who received a call from Wood about 2a.m. "He ran about 8km into the woods and he didnt know where he was."
Police search dogs tried tracing Wood, but lost his scent about 4a.m., said Const. Karolina Malik, with the Fort McMurray RCMP.
An RCMP helicopter was called to scour the area. Search and rescue teams helped hunt for Wood too.
As they searched, Wood continued calling friends, asking them to come pick him up. But when a pal hopped in his car and tried finding Wood, he was nowhere to be seen.
As the time, Anderson said, friends assumed the story would have a happy conclusing.
"We just thought the cops would probably find him (alive)," Anderson said. "But we didnt think it would come to this."
Dan Slade, who worked with Wood at Combo Energy Services, went out to look for his pal after learning he was missing.
"He said he was walking down the road and was freezing and wanted me to come get him," Slade said, adding: "I cant believe the guy's gone."
"He froze to death. They found him under a tree."
Police found Wood about 4p.m., several hours after he made his last phone call, which was logged avout 7:45a.m.
"He was a super guy," Slade said. "I dont think he hand an enemy in this world."
"Everybody loved the guy."
