The Task: Opening a Jar of Jam.
Author: Drew Adams
The Scene opens in the kitchen of a small hotel room, with Geoff preparing lunch. A Parisian mime knocks on the door, Geoff answers the door, the Mime, has a note from his daughter it reads “sorry you aren’t a very good cook Daddy I still love you.” The mime holds his hand out for a tip, and Geoff slams the door in his face. We see two slices of bread, a butter knife, and two jars one is peanut butter, and the other jam. Geoff rubs his hands together in anticipation, as he walks back to his hotel kitchen. Geoff with great ease opens the peanut butter, and begins spreading it out across the top of one of the pieces of his bread. We see Geoff reach over for the jam, and we watch him struggle with opening it. We hear Geoff grunt and groan as he struggles to open the jar of jam. He tries three times to open the stiff immovable jar, each time exerting himself more, and more. Geoff gets a manual can opener, and tries to use it on the lid, he tries, and tries to get it to fit to no avail. Somehow, he gets the can opener on there and exerts a great amount of pressure on the key. The small manual can opener bursts into pieces. Jump-cut to Geoff as he begins to tie dental floss around the lid of the jam jar, and the other to a door, he pulls the door open only to have the jam jar fly , with an incredible force, right into between his legs, we see Geoff wriggling in pain. Cut to Geoff as he begins to tap the jar against the counter, but it does nothing to loosen the sealed lid of the jam, and instead leaves a great big crack where the Jam Jar used to be. He goes to the sink and he turns the knob on the hot water faucet, he has the jar in his hands, and under the faucet in the sink; to melt the sugars along the rim of the jam with hot water. The Faucet does not respond, and there is no water, angrily with the jam in hand still struggling to open it, Geoff heads over to the phone, to call the front desk. Geoff puts the Jam down on the edge of the counter that is just out of reach, and begins to dial the phone, which is old fashioned and attached to the wall, the phone has a busy signal, frustrated Geoff hangs up with the force of a hurricane. The Phone falls down off of the wall and, onto Geoff’s big toe. Geoff begins hopping around the kitchen. Suddenly the sink turns on (it just needed to warm up.) and water begins flowing. Geoff begins hobbling over to the sink, but trips, and falls causing a roll of paper towels to fall into the sink, and activates a power button on a remote at the same time. The Remote turns on the little TV in the bedroom which he can see from the kitchen. On the TV we see a documentary of a chimp making short work of a great big nut by smashing it on a rock. Geoff grabs the remote on the floor and wriggles around to turn the TV off. Geoff can’t quite aim from the position he is in on the ground; so he stands up only to accidently hit his head on the lip of the counter, and sits back down dazed, confused, and in pain. Just then the jam falls down onto Geoff. He stands up and, begins twisting at the lid, aggressively but to no result! Geoff takes a small knife out of the drawer, but puts that back, then Geoff takes a medium knife out of the drawer, but puts that back, finally Geoff takes a meat cleaver out of the drawer and begins prying at the lip of the jam lid, while holding it in the other hand As he is flexing the meat cleaver against the jam lid he is creating pressure, bending the knife, and suddenly like a catapult he launches the jam across the room and into the TV, smashing it with a huge flash of light, causing the lights in the hotel room to flicker. Swiftly we see Geoff jump up and over the counter like a chimp; towards the living room, Geoff searches the wreckage and sees the jam is still intact. Geoff begins to make crazy chimp noises as he bashes the jam against the floor helplessly. Suddenly we see the water from the sink starting to spill out over the edge and onto the floor. Geoff with the jam in hand quickly rushes over to the sink to turn it off. Geoff slips on the wet floor and falls through the window, and narrowly escapes a deadly fall by grabbing onto the ledge, last minute. The jam is tucked safely in his arm, as he dangles for dear life. Geoff while dangling, looks at the jam, and contemplates letting go of it, but finds himself unable to do it, Geoff tosses the jam back up into the room, and begins climbing into the apartment. Geoff barely manages to get himself inside, he then goes over to the faucet and turns it off, Geoff gets a dust pan, and a mop and cleans up the kitchen, and the TV mess. Geoff’s small daughter Sophie and his wife Bianca enter the room back from touring Paris; Geoff plays it cool, as if nothing happened, as he places the Jam back with the peanut butter, Sophie heads directly to the jar of jam and very easily pops it open, then makes herself a sandwich, she then closes the jam. Geoff goes over, and tries to open it, but still can’t. Geoff hands the jar to his wife Bianca; Bianca pops it open with ease. Fade out.
