Tec Voc Wins Free Press Bowl!

IT was a kicker's finest moment Friday night when the Tec Voc Hornets Travis Klassen booted a 14-yard field goal with 55 seconds left in the game to win the Free Press (AA) Bowl in the Winnipeg High School Football League's AA championship in Canad Inns Stadium.
The Hornets trailed by a single point when they marched the ball deep in the red zone but were unable to punch it in. They called on Klassen to step up and the Grade 11 student delivered for a 22-20 win that WHSFL officials said gave Tec Voc its first football title since 1990. Klassen was named game MVP before a crowd of about 2,000.
"A 17-year-old kid kicking a field goal to win a championship is pretty impressive. It was pretty exciting, to say the least," said Tec Voc head coach Geordie Wilson, in his 16th year with the Hornets.
Tec Voc, which led 16-5 at the half, conceded a safety before Klassen booted a 22-yard field goal for a 19-7 lead after three quarters. Klassen and Joe Osiname scored the Tec Voc majors.
Sturgeon Creek mounted a comeback with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns. Cedrick Adams scored on a five-yard touchdown run to make it 19-14. But an untimely short punt by Tec Voc on the next series plus a no-yards call gave Sturgeon the ball on Tec Voc's 19-yard line. Four plays later, Sturgeon's Kelton Corrie ran eight yards for the go-ahead touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Sturgeon with a 20-19 lead. Tec voc won in the end 22-20 by a field goal.
