A motorist who took the pulse of a young man killed in one of two Highway 63 wrecks Tuesday says the victim had �absolutely no chance� to avoid the collision.

Jeff MacKenzie says RCMP are to blame for the wreck that killed Trevor DesRanleau and his passenger Caitlyn Hoffart, both 20, about 20 km south of Mariana Lake.

MacKenzie said he was driving north on Highway 63 on his way to Fort McMurray around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday when he went up over a rise and suddenly came upon a long lineup of stopped vehicles.

�I had to go sideways so I wouldn�t hammer into the vehicles that were backed up,� said MacKenzie, who was driving a pickup truck and trailer.

DesRanleau�s car was about three vehicles behind MacKenzie�s.

�When that kid came over the rise he had absolutely no chance of stopping before he hit the vehicles that were stopped.�

DesRanleau�s car slammed into a pickup truck, causing a chain reaction that damaged a total of four vehicles.

DesRanleau was ejected from the car while Hoffart was trapped inside, said MacKenzie.

�I was the first person to get to him and I checked his pulse, but he was gone.�

MacKenzie disputes Fort McMurray RCMP�s version of events.

Mounties said DesRanleau�s car was passing vehicles that were slowing down or stopped near a construction zone.

Mounties said DesRanleau�s car lost control and slammed broadside into the rear of a pickup truck.

But MacKenzie said traffic was backed up for at least 10 km due to police investigating another fatal wreck more than seven hours earlier, which killed two men on Highway 63 about 15 km south of Mariana Lake.

He said there was no warning whatsoever that cars would be slowing down or stopped up ahead.

�There is absolutely no excuse for the police not controlling their accident scene. That boy�s (DesRanleau�s) parents need to know that it was not their kid�s fault. It�s the cops� fault.�

But Fort McMurray RCMP spokesman Const. Tiffany Miller repeated Thursday that it was a construction zone, not the police investigation into the first fatal wreck, that was slowing traffic on that stretch of highway.

�All elements of the emergency response were cleared and the highway was completely reopened by the time of the second collision.�

Miller added there is a reduced speed zone in the area due to road construction, though she couldn�t say what the speed limit was.

DesRanleau was on his way to his oilpatch job near Fort McMurray when he was killed. His passenger was getting a ride to the northern boom town.
