It’s been a long time since Green Day’s 2005 album, American Idiot. After the 5 year wait the guys have released their new album, 21st Century Breakdown. Even though American Idiot sold millions of copies and took home loads of awards, the band’s strength is in its top rate live act. Live Nation and Nexopia wanted you to experience it!
Based on the theme "Silence is the enemy. Know your enemy." we got to wondering what the enemies of Nexusers would be. To enter this contest, we wanted to know what -- not who -- your enemy was. We’re looking for a thing -- not a person. Winners walked away with a pair of tickets to Green Day's local show, and one grand prize winner scored a signed copy of the ultra-rare deluxe boxed set of Ghost I-IV.
Grand prize winner:
My enemy; my backbiter; my contender is:
text communication
Reasons:
No one knows how to communicate properly anymore.
Boyfriends, girlfriends, bestfriends, room mates, husbands, wives and their fucking nine year old child AND the family pet are texting each other on their cellular phones, communicating via e-mail or instant message (MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Skype, Nexopia, Facebook, MySpace, ICQ, etc.) consistently when a problem has arose. No one confronts the issue anymore. No one has any BALLS anymore unless hidden behind a screen.
The main reason why this is my enemy is because I have to deal with it on a daily basis and confront it all of the time within the relationships I do have in my life. It's infuriating.
A boyfriend is angry at me? Oh, well the only way he knows how to talk about anything is through faceless banter. This way he can swear at me and get away with whatever it is he wants and portray a cold hearted asshole simply because this way he feels he wins.
My best friend goes silent during a conversation and I receive a text message ten hours later telling me off for not stepping in and protecting her or whatever the fuck reason she comes up with.
High school bullies don't even know how to bully in person anymore, it's online. Oh, wow, let's hunt down the nerdiest person in our class on Facebook and harass her to no end. Or whatever.
People answer their phones or text messages at the most inappropriate times! During a meal with the family, or your significant other, on a date, etc.
It's not just my enemy, it's our enemy. And we're consumer whores. We're lapping it up every chance we possibly get and without realizing it losing some important key factors when it comes to communicating in person with one another. No one even uses the telephone anymore to say hello. People don't even know how to stay on the telephone for five minutes without becoming bored or annoyed.
It's pathetic. Yet, I will probably continue to grow mind blowingly dumb because of it all. Just like the rest of you.
Runners-up:
My enemy? Hammer head sharks. Love, disease, heartache, internal struggles, I personally can alway seem to make the best of any situations created by them. Sure, they are unfortunate at times, and can spin someone right around. But I try to make the best of what I am given.
Except for hammer head sharks. I just plain do not like them. And I have zero need to reconcile, get over, or break up with them- as I can't see myself ever having to face one. The best enemy ever.
My Enemy is wasted potential and greed.
The two can almost be contradictory, but my grandmother used to have a saying: "You're either too lazy or too stupid. So which is it?" And in the world we live in that is a underlying truth. My enemy is people who like to be carried through out life, everyone needs to do their part in todays society, Everyone needs to do their best and not take anything for granted.
my enemy is fatigue. i'm going to have to drive from vancouver to saskatoon myself this week, so i'll have to drink a lot of energy drinks to stay awake. wouldn't want to drive off the side of a mountain.
As Im sure many of us know, Nexopia users have many enemys; ignorance, abuse, narcotics & alcohol, society, old age, and of course.. Facebook. To say that I have one enemy, would be incrediably hard. But, one of my main enemys is fear. Being afraid keeps us from doing so many things, its ridiculus. A man falls in love with another man, but he doesnt come out of the closet because he fears society will reject him - wont accept him for who he is. Why should we care who this man loves? Honestly- I would like to hear a valid answer to that. If you dont agree with homosexuality, then leave it alone. If you dont care about gays that much, then why waste time trying to convince everyone else that its so wrong? Everyone says that God hates homosexuals. In my opinion, if he hates it that much, why is he allowing it to happen? Seriously, if its such a bad thing, he shouldnt have made it exist.
Racism is another form of fear- i think so anyways. We're afraid of things - people - that are different. We can't change the color of our skin , and we shouldnt want to. We were made this way for a reason & people need to realize that. Skin color doesnt make you who you are. Honestly, I'm pretty damn happy that Obama is president. Its good to see that America has enough balls to finally elect an African-American to be their president, considering all of the racism thats been going on in this day & age. It really does need to stop. Whether it hurts people a little, or a lot, I think its a bad thing.
We all have our enemies, which we may or may not be faced with at some point in time, but either way I think we need to realize that enemies are essential. As stupid, wierd, and fucked up as that sounds, thats what I think. Enemies show us that there is no wrong or right opinion- theres always gonna be that one person that doesnt agree. For example, some people may think death is a good thing, whereas other people would strongly disagree. If death wasnt happening, the world would be overpopulated, which would result in more problems than we already have. But because death does occur, people are affected- losing people they love, which can change who they are, and their view on things. In this way , there is no right or wrong answer as to whether or not death is good, or bad.
Debt is my worst enemy, which is why I will be unable to attend the Green Day show in Winnipeg
MY ENEMY IS.. canker worms
oh god, hanging from the trees and falling out of nowhere .
Worst thing ever, they totally freak me out.
Even the way they move their bodies up and down when they move!
Eating all my wonderful trees leafs and making them icky. Pffft.
Mean, freaky, icky little bugs. thats my fear!!!
My enemy is love.
Moreso, those who search their whole life for it.
When it's evasive for 50%-70% of peoples lives. And then when you find it, you put yourself through hell to keep it.
Isn't love supposed to make one happy?
My enemy is Mr. T's mohawk. HAVE YOU SEEN THAT MOTHER FUCKER?! There's probably a great white shark hidden in that bitch. You never know. A-TEAM FOREVER.
Nexuser's naturally enemy is 404. or Server Unavailable.
My enemy is aging and time put together.
Every day we grow older and mature. We have to learn things that we once thought were never true, and the more we learn, the duller we get. The most intellectual people I know, have lost their sense of humor, where a smile used to lay, theres a pair of lips, dried out from all of the conversations of life and death that have once fallen out between them. No matter how much you want to believe that there is still a monster under the bed, or that the tooth fairy did exist when you were younger, when you get older, your brain has obtained so much information you can pretend to believe in it, but you know its a lie. The older you get, the more your humor and fun dries out. You know the probability of surviving crazy stunts, and you know that each day you waste, you're never going to get back because once you're alive, you're really only dying. This is also my enemy because when you get older, you have to face and deal with bigger problems. No longer is the cookie jar being empty the worst thing in your life. When you're a teenager you have to go through pressures such as GPA's and relationships, and parents of course. GPA's are really important for post secondary, and you have to be careful in choosing a career that you want to wake up to everyday. Something that will fit around your lifestyle, and there isn't enough time to take certain courses because it looked like fun, it gets serious and if you don't start young, you've screwed up your entire life if you come from a family that is in poverty especially. If you don't start young, you have to worry about the fact that soon you won't be putting yourself first, you'll have a family or significant other to support and their worries are just another file on your already stress-filled-binder-of-life. You have to make sure that your priorities are set straight, and to be honest, whose are? You need time to make sure you know where you're heading, but with time, comes the enemy. Aging. Aging is probably the scariest thing that mankind has ever had to endure. At least I believe so. You have to overcome new things, weird things. Theres puberty, which includes the occasional "where did that come from?", and theres weird things going on with your body 24/7. We cannot control our hormones, some of our opinions or decisions, and where life is taking us. Sometimes we want to just press pause, and breath. We want to get rid of the stressful toxins, or we want to embrace the warm, heartfelt moments where all you can feel is butterflies and the steady "thump thump" of your heart. But there are also moments when you want to fast forward, rewind, or even sometimes, stop altogether. We can only control our feelings to a certain extent, and with time, it doesn't stop when you're down in the dumps to give you a hand. Oh no. It's too busy making sure people are on time, it's too busy letting every second echo in your ear, teasing you. Saying "theres only so many more seconds, you're wasting them. One by one". If you wait too long, everything will be gone, your friends, your family, your life. When you get well into retirement, you'll be sitting there, watching souls die in front of your eyes, some from actual death, others from dysfunctions that old age has brought among them. All you'll have left is that one thought, "is today the day that I'll finally say goodbye?"
